Description
Girls Football Birmingham Football is the top female sport in England and in the 2006-07 season the number of players hit the 147,000 mark! There are now over 8000 clubs providing regular competitive football for girls and women in England. With the England women’s team qualifying for the world cup in China this September - there’s never been a better time to get involved!
There are many opportunities for girls to play football from taster sessions and min soccer centres to leagues, clubs and centres of excellence.
Mini Soccer Girls under the age of 11 years are given the opportunity to experience fun football sessions, introducing them to the game in a fun atmosphere. A number of mini soccer leagues are run across the Birmingham area and are a great way to get involved in the sport.
Girls School Football League Birmingham Secondary Schools Girls Football League has been set up to provide competitive playing opportunities for secondary schools. The leagues have been organised to provide girls with the opportunity to continue their involvement in football outside of PE lessons and experience competitive football in the hope to enthuse them about playing for a club.
There is a huge demand for girls football in schools, not only from those who want to play, but from teachers who want to maintain the girls involvement in the sport. This demand has led to the expansion of the league which now runs from three venues across the city.
Birmingham Secondary Schools Girls Football League – Power League • Aston – Archbishop Ilsley School, • Acocks Green • Colmers Farm, Rubery.
The Birmingham Secondary Schools Girls Football league feeds directly into the Birmingham Girls Football Championships with the top 4 teams from each venue qualifying for the competition. Alongside this there are the ESFA run girl’s 11-a-side competitions that a number of Birmingham schools compete in.
A number of PESCCL/3 Lions FC projects have been running to get girls who are playing at schools to make the transition into club football. The Sessions are run by local qualified club coaches in the local schools. Following this programme of coaching the girls are invited to attend further coaching sessions within the club environment. We hope this kind of project will help to make the move from school to club football a smooth transition.
Disability Disability football has been boosted greatly in the last 12 months with the development of the Birmingham and Solihull Disability Football Forum and a Football Foundation grant which has meant the recruitment of a full-time disability football co-ordinator.
Disability developments include a pilot special schools league, curriculum and extra-curricular coaching, holiday fun days, a centre of excellence and coach education. Our primary partners in the development of disability football are; • Aston Villa FC • Birmingham City Council • Birmingham CFA • EFDS • Clubs and volunteers • National Deaf Childrens Society – along with many teachers, SSCo’s and PDM’s.
