Birmingham Gay Scene, Nightingale
At the number one venue for live gay entertainment in the Midlands we're dedicated to bringing you great nights out week after week.
So Why is The Gale so Great?Way back in the day, 40 years ago or so, a group of gay men got together to start a club called the Nightingale.
There was nowhere to go back then of course and being gay had only just been decriminalised. Public attitudes had yet to change, so the mere fact that these men organised a public place where they could meet up was an incredibly brave move.
The first Nightingale was at Camp Hill, established in 1969, and moved to Witton Lane in 1975
In 1981, the Club moved to larger premises in Thorp St, but by 1994 even larger premises were needed bringing about the relocation to the current venue on Kent St.
At the foundation of the Club, its few members probably had little idea that what they started would be so durable and would become a cornerstone of the Midlands' gay community.
Nearly half a century later, the Club is still run on the principles founded all those years ago. The Nightingale is owned by its 450 members and run by a Board of gay people elected from that membership.
It's not a corporation run for the profit of individuals; all proceeds are returned into the business to build a bigger and better facility for us all.
